Ohio is filled with hardworking people, and it’s devastating to anyone to realize their health problems have grown so severe they can no longer earn a regular paycheck.
It’s a moment of confusion and anxiety: Just when your medical bills begin to climb, your income collapses. You’re worried whether you can keep a roof over your head and food on the table,
Social Security Disability benefits exist to ease that stress. These monthly checks go a long way to stabilizing your finances while you deal with your condition and treatment.
But to use those benefits, you have to win them. Social Security does not make it easy. It’s their job to make sure no one receives benefits they’re not entitled to. They’ve put in place plenty of rules and procedures meant to weed out anyone who applies in bad faith.
This approach also makes it exceptionally tough for people who fully deserve the disability benefits Social Security offers. Most applications are met with denial letters. Then there are several additional stages after a denial for applicants to appeal—each with their own odds for success.
It’s logical to ask, “What are my chances of winning disability benefits?”
Every case is unique, but here’s a look at Social Security’s national numbers from late 2025:
In Ohio, applicants face similar odds as the whole country, with these results from late 2025:
Basically, about two out of every three Social Security Disability applicants must appeal a denial on their path to winning benefits.
A potential way to increase your chances is to work with a skilled disability attorney. At Horenstein, Nicholson & Blumenthal (HNB), we’ve helped thousands of hardworking Ohioans facing these long odds.
You pay no fee for a disability lawyer until you win benefits.
With us by your side all the way, you’ll say: “Helping Me, that’s HNB.”
Because the approval rate for Social Security Disability benefits is so low, most applicants will receive a denial letter and begin the process of appealing.
Social Security offers several opportunities to convince them to reverse their decision, and each comes with its own odds of success.
Let’s take them one at a time:
Reconsideration: This is your first appeal. You can present additional medical and work history evidence and correct any mistakes on your initial application. In Ohio, approval at the reconsideration stage is very low:
Hearing: The next step is to request a hearing before a Social Security Disability administrative law judge. When you’re able to tell your story to a judge, you typically have your best chance to earn a favorable ruling. In Ohio, hearing judges have recently overturned denials about 56 percent of the time.
Appeals Council: If you disagree with the hearing judge’s decision, you can ask the Appeals Council to review your case. Full approvals are very rare at this point, but often the council will send your case back to the Ohio judge to reconsider.
Federal Court: Taking your case to federal court is a last resort, and it’s rare to have a decision overturned. However, federal judges can ask the hearing judge to re-evaluate your case, giving you another chance at success.
No matter where you are in the process, HNB can help. Having our experienced Ohio Social Security Disability team could help you get the best possible odds, and we offer an assessment of your disability claim free of charge.

Social Security Disability is complicated on purpose. There is no way to “game” the system; it requires thoroughness and honesty to successfully win benefits.
Here are a few tips that can help improve your chances.
1) Fully fill out your forms: You would be surprised how many claims are tossed because a line was left blank or the information was entered in the wrong space.
2) Gather all medical evidence: You will want to collect more than what’s required on your application, in the form of records, reports and results from your doctors, partly so you’re immediately ready for the appeals process, just in case.
3) Stick to your treatment plan: Social Security could look for gaps in your treatment, see that as a sign your health problems aren’t serious, and use it as grounds to deny your claim.
4) Cooperate with Social Security: Make sure you answer all their questions, provide the information they’re looking for, and meet the deadlines they set.
5) Get a Social Security Disability lawyer: There is no better way to make sure your claim is organized and strong than having someone highly experienced taking care of the process for you.
